When artists step outside of concert halls, galleries, and other ’sanctioned’ art spaces, they become advocates, community builders, and change makers. In this panel discussion, we will hear from artists Ekene Ijeoma of the Poetic Justice Lab at MIT Media Lab, Ali Momeni, Professor of Practice within the Brown Arts Initiative, Tega Brain, Assistant Professor of Integrated Digital Media, New York University, and San Diego-born, Tijuana-raised, and LA-based artist, designer, craftsperson Tanya Aguiniga, founder and director of the AMBOS project.
In the Crafting Sound concert and panel discussion, we will turn a critical eye towards the technologies of sound, examining unspoken and unquestioned value systems inherent in these technologies. The program features artists who reclaim creative agency in their practice through intentional design of bespoke hybrid instruments and technologies, exploring how handicraft and technologies can engage new audiences and transform creative sound-making practices.
In this talk, Chris Collins will present a case-study on reworking his Spring 2021 New Media Art class at SAIC, which he unofficially retitled "How to Make Art in a Pandemic". He’ll present his syllabus, assignment prompts, and student work. He’ll also share tips, strategies, and techniques that worked for him (and what didn’t) as we all attempted to navigate this exhausting, stressful, and awkward world of online learning– and what we can all take from this time into the future.
